Donald Clifford Nelson

Don Nelson died peacefully,
surrounded by family, on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Josephine Sunset
Home in Stanwood, WA.
Don was born on March 26, 1918 to Carl and Mabel Nelson in Plymouth Township,
rural southern Wisconsin. He attended Fisher Grade School and graduated
in 1935 from Orfordville High School.
After high school, he signed professional baseball contracts with AAA
Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a star player on
many baseball and softball teams in southern Wisconsin.
In 1942, he married Alice Brown. They were married for 32 years before
her death. They had four children. In 1977, Don and Delores Meyers were
married. They were together for 23 years before her passing.
He farmed in Luther Valley until 1972, moving to Orfordville, where he
worked for the Rock County Highway Department for several years. He relocated
to Camano Island, WA in 2003 to be near his children.
He was an active member of the Footville Church of Christ, serving as
an Elder and Chairman of the church board. In addition, he served as President
of the Village of Orfordville and President of the Orfordville School
Faith, family, community, farming, baseball, and the Green Bay Packers
were what he cherished most in life. He was a good farming neighbor and
could always be counted on to lend a helping hand to those in need.
He is survived by his children: Phillip and Cindy Nelson of Shawano, WI,
Lois and Alan Gardner of Seattle, WA, Larry and Linda Nelson of Kent,
WA, and Diane and Darrell Wood of Camano Island, WA; 11 grandchildren,
and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mae Swain
of Bartlett, TN; his sister-in-law, Madge Nelson, of Janesville, WI; Jose
Zevallos (exchange student from Ecuador); and numerous nieces and nephews.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held at Camano Chapel, 867 S. West Camano Dr.,
Camano Island, WA at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 14, 2012. Luncheon
Another service will be held at the Footville Church of Christ in Footville,
WI on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Luncheon to follow. Burial
at Luther Valley Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Josephine Sunset Home for the
wonderful care given to their Dad and Grandpa.
