Eugene J. Myers, 95, of Elyria passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph in Lorain. He was born January 2, 1916 in Elyria, where he was a lifelong resident.

Eugene attended St. Agnes School, and was a 1934 Elyria High School graduate, a 1939 Ohio State University graduate. From April of 1942 to August of 1945 Eugene served with the Army-Air Force in the Middle East, North Africa, Sicily and Italy.

He played Minor League baseball with the Chicago White Sox farm team. Eugene retired from Cleveland Paper Co. in 1985, and had previously worked at General Motors (Brown-Lipe-Chapin) in Elyria. He was Captain of the Ohio State Baseball team in 1939, and was named to the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame Class of 1976. Eugene enjoyed sports and reading; and had coached Little League baseball.

Survivors include two daughters; Kathleen Barney (William), of LaGrange, Rosemary Myers of Elyria; three grandchildren, Laura Gleason (Jeff), Daniel Barney (Kristen) and Anne Bowers (Zack).

Eugene was preceded in death by his wife of sixty two years, Dorothy L. (nee McAvena); and his parents, Matthew and Katherine Myers.

Funeral Mass is 1 P.M. Saturday, January 29, 2011 at St. Agnes Church, 611 Lake Ave. Elyria, where the family will receive friends from 12 Noon until time of Mass. Rev. Fr. Albert Veigas, Pastor will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria, where V.F.W. Post 1079 will provide full military honors.
