John R. Mulcahy, 80, died at 10:10 a.m. Aug. 7, 2010, at his residence.

He was born May 8, 1930, in Lima to Thomas A. and Mary A. Daley Mulcahy. On May 25, 1957, he married Donna J. Seifert, who survives in Lima.

Mr. Mulcahy was a 1948 graduate of St. Rose High School and a member of St. Rose Catholic Church. He played professional baseball for the Lima Indians, Pittsfield Mass., and the Canadian League. He also played for the Peoria, Ill., Three-I League, Terre Haute, Ind., Three-I League, Wilkes Barre, Penn., Eastern League and the Cincinnati Reds. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a partner in the Dugan, Mulcahy and Seifert Insurance Agency, retiring in 1993. He was elected into the Lima Central Catholic Hall of Fame, for service to the Lima Central Catholic community, along with St. Gerard Hall of Fame. He coached Catholic Youth Organization ball for 25 years. He was a life member of the Professional Baseball Organization, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and a member of Knights of Columbus, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 54 and YMCA. He was an avid fan of the Lima Central Catholic T-Birds and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Survivors include a daughter, Maryellen (Allen) Hovest, of Lexington, Ky.; three sons, Mike J. (Ann) Mulcahy, of Elida, Dan (Mona) Mulcahy, of Springboro, and Steve (Lynn) Mulcahy, of Lima; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, June Mulcahy, of Lima.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Rose Catholic Church. The Rev. David Ross will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel.
