Wilmer E. Moton, Sr. was born September 5, 1933 in Greenville, Texas and passed away in Stockton, February 4, 2008. Upon graduating from Stockton College, Moton became the first black bonus baseball player to sign with the Cleveland Indians and played with the St. Louis Cardinals and other minor league teams before ending his career in baseball. After 34 years with the City of Stockton, he retired in 1993 as a supervisor in the Public Works Department.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years Shirley; one son, Wilmer Moton, Jr.; daughters, Wilann and Monique Moton; three brothers, George (Florence), David and Alton Moton; sister, Constance Moton; grandson Xavier Brown and many other relatives.
Visitation is Tuesday, February 12, 1-7 p.m. and Family Quiet Hour is from 6-7 p.m. at Thompson Memorial Chapel, 2118 East Lafayette, Stockton. Funeral services are Wednesday, February 13 at 11:00 a.m., Progressive Community Church, 209 S. "C" Street.
