ROSSVILLE, Thomas Houston Mize Jr., 77, formerly of Rossville died at home in Flagler Beach, Fla., Wednesday, April 27, 2011.

Thomas moved to Rossville from Birmingham in late 1940s. He was a well-known athlete at Rossville and played football at Carson Newman College. Thomas also played minor league baseball with the Washington Senators farm chain.

He was previously employed by Alabama National Guard/Special Forces Group and the U.S. Army. He was a Green Beret. In 1985 he moved to Florida after retiring from the army as a Chief Warrant Officer.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. T.H. Sr.; sister, Hazel Bearden, of Hoover, Ala.

Survived by wife, Joyce Veazey Mize; two sons, Philip from Virginia, Glen from Flagler Beach; a granddaughter, Brook Noreiga; and two great-grandchildren of Fayetteville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas was laid to rest in a private ceremony with full military honors in Flagler Beach, Fla., on May 2, 2011.
