Walter "Mitch" Mitchell, 79, of Simsbury, husband of the late S. Doreen Mitchell, died Monday (September 6, 2010) at Hartford Hospital. He was born on April 3, 1931 in Unionville, son of the late Alexander and Catherine Mitchell. He had lived in Simsbury for over 60 years.

Mitch was an outstanding athlete at Simsbury High School. He earned 11 letters in sports; three were in football, four in basketball, and four in baseball. After graduating high school, Mitch was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He played baseball in Albany, Georgia, and Cocoa, Florida. He also played for the Hartford Courant All Stars and the Simsbury Town Team.

Mitch owned and operated Mitchell Plumbing and Heating Company for 25 years before his retirement in 1994.

He leaves his son, Tim Mitchell and daughter-in-law, Pam of North Granby; his daughter Lee-Ann Oatman and her husband Thomas of Andover, MA. He also leaves four wonderful grandchildren, Chelsea, Philip, and Neil Mitchell and Jonathan Oatman.

He was predeceased by his brother Alfred Mitchell. He also leaves a brother, Donald Mitchell and his wife Carol of Zephyr Hills, FL, two sisters, Arlyne Schultz and her husband Jim of Pompton Plains, NJ, Elsie Wassell and her husband Rich of Windsor, his sister-in-law, Lillian Mitchell of East Granby, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, Friday (September 10th) from 6-8 p.m.

Funeral will be Saturday (September 11th), 8:45 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 9:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church, Tariffville.

Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
