John Francis Metoskie,
age 95, of Corsicana died peacefully on May 1, at Heritage Oaks Retirement
Village. He was born on April 21, 1915 in Suffern, New York to parents
Elizabeth and John Metoskie where he spent his childhood.
John graduated from Fordham University in New York with a masters degree
in education. While at Fordham he played on the baseball, football, and
tennis teams. After graduation he played semi-pro baseball and was farmed
out to the Cincinnati Red Legs. He married Margaret Belle Jessell and
began a teaching and coaching career. He moved his family to Texas in
the late 1940's and began working at Chance Vought Aircraft. He moved
to Corsicana 16 years ago where he remained active into his 70's and 80's
with activities that included hiking, bike riding, scuba diving, snow
and water skiing and tennis with his family. Known as "Grandfather",
he was loved by family and friends especially his grandsons to whom he
gave of his time generously. He had a deep religious faith and was an
active member of Immaculate Conception Church where he was a member of
the Legion of Mary. We will miss him very much.
He is survived by daughter Marcia Nelson and her husband John D. Nelson
of Corsicana; daughter in law Janice Metoskie of Richardson.; grandsons,
John C. Nelson of Corsicana, Eric Metoskie of Richardson, and Alan Metoskie
of Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, Dee Paradossi
and Dolly Metoskie; and his son John A. Metoskie.
Rosary and visitation will be 7 pm. Sunday, May 2 at Corley Funeral Home
Chapel. A funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 3, at Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church with Rev. Danilo Ramos officiating. Entombment will be
in Calvary Hill Memorial Park in Dallas.
The family requests memorials to James L. Collins Catholic School.
