Joseph A. McLaughlin of Everett, a retired typesetter, died Friday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 74.

Born in Medford and raised in Somerville, Mr. McLaughlin settled in Everett more than 40 years ago.

He graduated from Somerville High School in 1955.

Mr. McLaughlin was drafted by the San Francisco Giants of baseball’s National League and played in the team’s farm system for more than three years in the early 1960s.

He worked as a typesetter for Daniel’s Printing Co. in Everett for more than 30 years, prior to his retirement.

He is survived by a brother, David J. of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Sister Laura Ann “Betty” McLaughlin, S.P., of Ocean Grove, N.J.; and a cousin.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Anthony’s Church, Everett.

Burial will be private.
