Charles "Chick" Victor McCombie Sr., 80, passed away Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at his residence in Newport, N.C. Formerly of Lynchburg, he was born Jan. 28, 1928, in Elmira, Pa., to the late Charles and Helen Pavlick McCombie.

Chick was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a former baseball pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals.

He is survived by his wife, Iris Carter McCombie; four daughters, Nancy Novak of Reisterstown, Md., Shelly Londborg of San Diego, Calif., and Hope McCracken and Vanessa Matteson, both of Lynchburg; two sons, Chuck and Keith McCombie, both of Lynchburg; one stepdaughter, Deneen Shore; three stepsons, Steve and Charles Brooks, both of Lynchburg, and James Brooks of Newport, N.C.; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Bradley Todd McCombie.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at Tree of Life Ministries, Greenville Drive. Pastors Mike Dodson and Jeff Spencer will be officiating.
