Leon McClinton, 77 of Little Rock AR passed away August 24, 2010 at Arkansas Hospice in Little Rock. He was born Jan 29th 1933 in Des Moines, IA to John K and Leona Stamp McClinton. He was a lefty professional baseball pitcher in the minor leagues. He was a published author. He was a teacher for over 40 years and high school athletic coach.
Leon received his education at Arkansas Polytechnic College 1952-1953. Received his BS in education at University of Central Arkansas in 1959. M.A. education Wisconsin State University, Stevens Point WI in 1968.

He pitched for minor league baseball teams at Fort Smith AR and Green Bay WI with the Cleveland Indian organization in 1951-1952. He pitched for teams at Peoria Il and Winnipeg Manitoba with the Saint Louis Cardinal organization in 1955-1957.

In 1953-1955 he served in the US Army, member of Ninth Corps battalion rifle team in Korean Far East Championships; served in Korea and Japan.

He was a High school English teacher and athletics coach in Osceola AR 1959, Winnipeg Manitoba 1960-1965 and Antigo WI 1965-1984. He was a published author with his 1974 book “Cross-Country Runner” named “top juvenile book” by Wisconsin Writers Council 1974, and best book of 1974 by World Book Encyclopedia.

In 1984 he relocated back to Arkansas and taught high school, college courses at UCA and adult education.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Lynn McClinton of Conway AR; and his first wife Joan Vingers McClinton of Mercer WI.

He is survived by his wife Sue Vanlandingham-McClinton of Little Rock; three children, Cheryl Racine of Antigo WI; Mark McClinton of Wausau WI; and Scott McClinton of Sun Prairie WI; eight grandchildren and two great grand children all of WI; his sister Joan Skelton of Conway AR; and six nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be 2:00pm Monday August 30, 2010 at Griffin Leggett Healey and Roth Funeral Home 5800 W 12th St. Little Rock AR. There will be a reception at Immanuel Brookwood Baptist Church 6811 Brookview Dr Little Rock prior to the funeral services.
