Southbridge - Wilfred
"Tarkie" E. Materas, 80, of Southbridge, MA died Saturday, September
8, 2012 at Umass Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Tarkie is survived by his wife of 48 years, Italia "Tally" (Macri)
Materas. They were married August 29, 1964. He is also survived by his
son and daughter-in-law, Gregory M. and Bonnie J. (Asselin) Materas of
Charlton, MA; his daughter, Karen A. (Materas) Walker of Northborough,
MA; his grandchildren, Emily N. Materas and Mark G. Materas of Charlton,
MA, and Kayli A. Walker and Jakeb G. Walker of Northborough, MA; his sister,
Carmalina "Camie" Pacheco of North Smithfield, RI, and many
nephews, nieces, and close friends. He was predeceased by his brother,
Michael Materas, and sister, Christine St. Pierre. Born in Southbridge,
MA, on November 12, 1931, he was the son of the late Gregorio "Roxie"
and Genny (Giacobbi) Materas.
Tarkie was a graduate of the former Mary E. Wells High School in Southbridge,
MA. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in the Korean War. He was
a professional baseball player with the Milwaukee Braves. He worked for
20 years as a police officer for the Town of Southbridge, retiring in
1979. Together with his wife, he owned and operated the former Tarkie's
Bar & Grill, and Tarkie's Pizza, both in Southbridge.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church. He enjoyed sports, especially his
time spent playing softball for Like Nu Cleaners. He also enjoyed watching
the Boston Red Sox, golfing, playing cards, going to Foxwoods and going
to Pete's Spa every day to visit with his many friends. What he enjoyed

The funeral will be Wednesday, September 12, 2012 from Sansoucy Funeral
Home, 40 Marcy Street, Southbridge, MA with a Mass of Christian Burial
at noon in St. Mary's Church, 263 Hamilton Street, Southbridge. Burial
with military honors will immediately follow at New Notre Dame Cemetery
on North Woodstock Road, Southbridge. Calling hours are Tuesday, September
11, 2012 from 4 - 7 PM at the funeral home. The family requests, in lieu
of flowers, that memorial donations be made to a charity of one's choice.
