A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family for Richard V. Masterman of Hamburg, who died on Saturday, September 10, 2011.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl (Jewart) Masterman; children, Rick Masterman and Tammy (Tom) Fadale; mother, Lillian Masterman; sister, Karol (late Jim) Moran; grandchildren, Tommy, Trevor and Tanner and “Truman”; niece, Lisa (Brian); nephew, Jim (Cheryl); and great-nephew, Kyle.

He was predeceased by his father, Vernon Masterman.

Mr. Masterman attended Frontier High School, where at the time, he was considered one of the most respected pitchers in Western New York. His 16-inning, 23-strike-out performance in Section VI Championship game solidified his position as one of the toughest and most competitive pitchers in the school’s history.

He signed with the Baltimore Orioles and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was inducted into the Canadian, Buffalo Bison and Frontier halls of fame.

After completing his professional baseball career, he was a journeyman steamfitter with Local No. 395 for 30 years. He retired at age 55.

Arrangements were made through the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home.
