LORIAN - Walter Lukesic, age 86, of Lorain, passed away Friday, June 3, 2011 at New Life Hospice Residential Center, following a short illness.

He was born on May 3, 1925, in Lorain to the late John and Katherine (nee Bartolovich) Lukesic.

He attended Lorain High School and was a member of the football team. Prior to his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy serving on the USS Laning as a Coxswain during World War II.

Upon his discharge, he played professional baseball in the New York Yankee farm system. Walt continued to play baseball locally and also coached his son on various teams and leagues in the area.

Walt was employed as a pipefitter at U.S. Steel, retiring in 1986. He was an avid sportsman and served as a hunting guide at the Beaver Creek Hunt Club for the past 50 years. He was an active member of the Amherst Sportsman Club, Local AFLCIO, American Croation Club, Lorain Columbian Club, Amherst Eagles, American Legion # 0118, Amvets and a past member of St. Vitus Church. He enjoyed playing golf and cards.

He is survived by his son, Mark (Carol) Lukesic, of Lorain; daughter Sarah (Michael) Duff, of Sheffield Lake; grandchildren, Katie, Lizabeth and Marcy Lukesic; sisters, Sylvia Sholle, of Lorain and Mary (Dick) Ott, of North Carolina.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Mary Jayne (nee Stinson), in 1985 and his daughter, Amy, in 1991.

The Lukesic family will receive friends on Monday, June 6, 2011 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will be officiated by Barbara Habecker, Certified Funeral Celebrant.

Interment will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
