Robert H. Ludwick Sr., 81, of Marshallton, died on Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Chester County Hospital, West Chester, after a lengthy illness.

He was the husband of Dorothy E. Ludwick. They were married on Aug. 20, 1948, in Nashua, N.H.

Born in West Chester, he was the son of the late William H. and Lulu Ludwick of Marshallton.

Mr. Ludwick was a 1946 graduate of West Chester High School. He attended West Chester State Teachers College briefly before leaving to pursue a professional baseball career.

Mr. Ludwick, a left-handed pitcher, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and played in their farm system for eight seasons, rising as high as the AAA Montreal Royals. He played his final professional season in the Washington Senators chain.

After returning home, he was employed at Wyeth Pharmaceutical Laboratories, West Chester, for 29 years and at Fermenta, West Chester, for three years before retiring in 1988.

Mr. Ludwick was a member of the Marshallton United Methodist Church.

From 1968 to 1972, he was the left-handed batting practice pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. He also pitched, managed and was an official in the West Chester Adult Baseball League for many years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert Jr., husband of Sharman Jordan Ludwick of Exton, and Randy, partner of John Justice of Marshallton; and two grandchildren, Jordan Ludwick of West Chester, and Amy, wife of Ryan Dauksis of Plymouth Meeting.

Mr. Ludwick was predeceased by his brother, William H. Ludwick Jr.; and two sisters, Leah "Honey" Johnson and Doris Rementer.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10, at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery, Marshallton.
