Niuman A. Loiz, 37, of East Moline, passed away Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at home, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at Sacred Heart Church, Moline. A Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111 1st St. A, Moline with visitation to follow from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to an education fund for his children.

Niuman was born Dec. 12, 1973, in Caracas, Venezuela, the son of Carlos and Mireya Sivira De Loiz. He married Cris Wessel on Sept. 13, 1997, in Moline.

Niuman was employed at Brinks Armored Services, Davenport. He also had worked at FedEx Frieght, East Moline.

Niuman signed as a professional baseball player at age 17 with the Houston Astros organization, playing in the U.S. in 1995. He later played with the Milwaukee Brewers. He became a U.S. citizen at Rock Island County in 2008. He loved to golf and salsa dance and was an avid baseball fan.

Survivors include his daughters, Macey and Gabriela Loiz, East Moline; parents, Carlos and Mireya Sivira De Loiz, Venezuela; siblings, Wilfredo Loiz, Odemar Loiz, Alicia Loiz, Julio Zambrano and Luis Zambrano, all of Venezuela; in-laws, Jackie and Tim Wessel, Pete and Staci Wessel, Derek and Stacy Wessel, and special friends, Cris Loiz, Luc and Maria Martel, America and Nelson Pena, Amanda Kratzberg, Johan Santana and Freddie Garcia.
