MAIDEN - "Dab"
Floyd Recil Laney Sr., 78, of Maiden, passed away Oct. 25, 2008, at Catawba
Valley Medical Center.
Born Feb. 20, 1930, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Hoyle
and Lucy Lawing Laney. Dab was a loving father, grandfather and farmer.
He retired from Carolina Freight as a truck driver and was a member of
Center View Baptist Church in Maiden.
Mr. Laney signed with the Atlanta Crackers as a catcher, with Earl Mann
and played in Virginia, Florida and Georgia for the Twins. He was an avid
athlete at Balls Creek High School and also played for the American Legion
Post 16 team in Newton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter,
Patty Laney, three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his loving
wife of 59 years, Pat Ogletree Laney of the home; two daughters, Penny
Severt and husband, Hugh, of Hickory and Sandy Arndt and husband, David,
of Denver; a son, Recil Laney and wife, Sharon, of Maiden; two sisters,
Bunie Lowman of Maiden and Burl Barker of Linolnton; three granddaughters,
Allison Burgin, Dana Johnson and Maggy Laney; and two grandsons, Eric
Little and Ryan Laney.
The funeral service will be held today, Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at 3 p.m.
at Center View Baptist Church in Maiden, with the Revs. Glenn Sellers
and Larry McCraken officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today, Monday, from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m.
at Center View Baptist Church, prior to the service. Memorials may be
made to Center View Baptist, 3976 E. Maiden Road, Maiden, N.C. 28650.
