SANFORD -- Walter
L'Heureux, 85, of Sanford, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007.
He was born in Sanford on Nov. 19, 1922, their son of Albert and Blanche
(Fontaine) L'Heureux. He attended local schools and served in the U.S.
Army in World War II.
While serving time in the military he played baseball against many well
known stars including Dom Dimaggio, Johnnie Pesky, Joe Cronin, Ted Williams
and Vic Wertz.
Throughout the next several years Walter played professional baseball
in Canada for the Granby Red Sox and later declined a contract to play
for a New York Yankee affiliate in Geneva, N.Y. and returned to Sanford
to raise a family.
In 1982 Mr. L'Heureux was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.
On May 18, 1946, he married Christine (Tina) Legere and had three children.
He continued to play baseball for the local Goodall Sanford Team and another
semi-professional team in Rochester, N.H. He worked for Universal Shoe
Co. and later became self employed as a carpenter.
Mr. L'Heureux enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. You could
always expect to see him at any event involving his grandchildren. He
also developed a passion for the game of golf and was a member of the
Sanford Country Club. He also enjoyed playing cards with friends and telling
a joke or two. Mr. L'Heureux remained a life-long communicant of St. Ignatius
He is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Christine (Legere) L'Heureux;
two brothers, Leo and Arthur L'Heureux. He will be sadly missed by his
three children, James L'Heureux and his wife Susan of North Berwick, Paul
L'Heureux and his wife Debbie of Sanford, and Susan Young and her husband
Allan of Sanford. Mr. L'Heureux is also survived by three brothers, Robert
L'Heureux and his wife Theresa of Sanford, Henry L'Heureux and his wife
Barbara of Springvale, Norman and Shirley of Lyman; two sisters, Lillian
Cyr of Shapleigh, Annette Vaccaro and her husband Tom, of Rochester, N.H.;
along with eight grandchildren, Melissa Sullivan and her husband Dan of
Rochester, N.H., Jason L'Heureux of North Berwick, John L'Heureux of Sanford,
Anne Purcell of Saco, Gwynne Almeida and her husband Fred of Pawtucket,
R.I., Nathan Goodwin of Shapleigh, Justin and Joshua Young of Sanford;
and nine great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 22, at
11 a.m., at the St. Thérese of Lisieux Parish, St. Ignatius Church
Interment will take place in the spring at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
