Lee Kinnard Former Concord Resident Robert "Bobby" Lee or "Buster"
Kinnard, age 81, passed away on Saturday, the 9th of October 2010, at his home
in Cazadero, CA.
Bob was born, to Luther and Clara Belle "Kate"
Kinnard, on the 27th of April, 1929 in Fort Cobb, OK.
Bob was one of 14
children, and described his childhood house as being "full of kids"
- one story, one bedroom, a kitchen and a family room, with all the boys outside
on the 'sleeping porch', the original frat house. He spent much of his childhood
in Oklahoma even living with his oldest sister Sis and her husband Leon Nunn,
who was like another father to Bob; during the 9th grade he moved to Richmond,
CA with his parents and younger siblings.
He was an incredibly talented
athlete - lettered in football, basketball and baseball at El Cerrito High School;
as a County All Star he played baseball in East Bay vs. West Bay, City vs. County,
and batted .375 his senior year; inducted to the 2009 El Cerrito Hall of Fame;
and went on to play for the St. Louis Cardinals farm team before being drafted
to the Army where he served his country in the Korean War.
Edna Isabelle Martinez in 1956. They settled in Concord, CA, where Bob was a shipwright
carpenter at the SF and Oakland harbors, and they raised their 3 children.
was an avid hunter and spent most every October with his brothers and nephews
deer and elk hunting in Northern California and Colorado.
Bob and Edna
retired to their Cazadero, CA property in 1991, where the two of them spent the
remainder of their days, enjoying the redwood forest, all the critters and for
the last 10 years they were under the loving care of their son Paul.
an adult, Bob remained an avid athlete - he loved swimming and hiking, even water
skied for the first time at age 51.
Bob is survived by his three children
Teri (and her husband Dave Scafidi of Sammamish, WA), Paul (of Cazadero, CA) and
Rob (of Concord, CA); his grandchildren Kerri Kinnard (Concord, CA), Adam Kinnard
(Pomona College), Michael Scafidi (Gonzaga University), Mason Kinnard (University
of the Pacific), Mark Scafidi (Weil Tennis Academy, NHS), and Miranda Kinnard
(YVHS); his great-granddaughter Kailyn Sterley; his siblings Betty Hilburn, Peggy
Tierney, Jack Kinnard and Tom Kinnard; his childhood friends, more like 2 more
brothers, Ted Baxter and Ron Gee; lastly with 14 brothers and sisters, there are
also some 60 nieces and nephews and more than 150 great-nieces and nephews, countless
friends and extended family.
Bob is predeceased by his wife, of some 45
years, Edna "Belle"; siblings Guy Kinnard, Eithel "Sis" Nunn,
Edith Kinnard, James "Jimmy" Kinnard, Charles "Heavy" "Searge"
Kinnard, Luther "Junior" Kinnard, Chester Carl "Shy" Kinnard,
Ruby Wall, and Dortha Kay "KayKay" Gilbert. "And they're off!"
A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, the 24th
of October at the Cazadero Fire House on Cazadero Highway. All are welcome.
