EMIL "LEFTY" KARLIK, of Tuscon, Ariz., formerly of FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, passed away Friday, May 30. Emil, born June 7, 1932, was raised in Newark. He lived in Oakland and Freehold Township before moving to Tuscon.

He was a graduate of East Side High School and Montclair State College. Emil played baseball for the Detroit Tigers and was the backup outfielder for Al Kaline. Later, he was honored and inducted into the Newark Hall of Fame. Emil was a retired physical education teacher who taught and coached baseball and football at Mater Dei High School in New Milford and Raritan High School in Hazlet, where he coached Ed Marinaro. Emil was greatly loved and will be missed by all.

He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Stephan Karlik; his brothers, Karol, Jerry and John. Surviving are his loving daughters, Nancy Eischeid and her husband David, and Debbie Maloney and her husband Kyle; two grandsons, Trevor and Colin Eischeid; a brother, Steve Karlik and his wife Doris; a sister, Eleanor Mirandi and her husband Thomas; a sister-in-law, Mildred Karlik; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
