CINCINNATI: John Kachilla, 88, passed away on March 15, 2013 at home in Cincinnati, Ohio after a long illness surrounded by his wife of 56 years, Kate (Carpenter) and his family.
John was born on February 6, 1925 near Cambridge, Ohio. He served in the US Navy during WWII and saw action aboard LST-737 in numerous operations in the South Pacific, including the liberation of the Philippines and the assault and occupation of Okinawa. Following the war, he attended Muskingum College in New Concord. He was active in local baseball teams and earned a stint in the Philadelphia Athletics' minor league baseball system in the early 1950s. He was a teacher and coach at South Zanesville and later Maysville High School for many years where he coached many successful teams. He was inducted into the Maysville HS Hall of Fame in 2006.
He is survived by his wife; a sister (Helen Carter); four daughters (Sue Haines, Judy Dilts and Nancy King, all of Cincinnati, and Mary Mains of Orange County, California); and nine grandchildren (Jon Rock, MD of Columbus, Ohio, Lt. Cameron Dilts USAF, of Albuquerque, NM, Stuart and Olivia Mains of California, Ellen (Dilts) Heredia of Gainesville, Fla., Livia Dilts of Guangzhou, China, Andrew and Jacob King of Cincinnati and Holly Haines of Cincinnati).
