William C. "Bill" Jones, age 83, of Birmingham, died Dec. 26, 2011, after a lengthy illness at his home in Chateau Vestavia in Birmingham. Bill was born in Berry to Meryl Hall and Clifton Jones on February 27, 1928. He attended Berry schools and graduated with a B.S. from the University of Alabama.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joyce Honeycutt Jones; son, Greg Jones; and grandchildren, Lee Jones and Caitlin Jones.

Bill began a minor league baseball career at age 17 when he signed with the Birmingham Barons. He later joined the Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing, and an avid sports fan who loved the Atlanta Braves, the Crimson Tide, and the game of golf. He worked with young people in various athletic programs throughout his life. He became a Christian at an early age and served in many capacities in the Baptist Church, with membership at Fayette First Baptist. After his retirement from the Alabama State Department of Revenue, he and his wife enjoyed travelling throughout the United States and several foreign countries.

Bill was a loving man of incredible strength and far-reaching compassion. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. today at Chateau Vestavia in Birmingham with Rev. Ben Hatfield officiating and also at Nelson Funeral Home in Fayette at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011, with Bro. Scott Davis officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
