Ronald Charles Jirsa
He was born in Baltimore, Md., on Oct. 25, 1932, the son of Charles and Hazel (Sapp) Jirsa. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1950. He attended Lehigh University and received his bachelor of arts degree in mathematics in 1954. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1953 until 1955, and was stationed in Guam for 18 months.
Ron pitched for the Boston Red Sox organization from 1956 until 1958. He worked at Electric Boat and retired in 1990 as chief of engineering computer systems.
He married the former Joan VanDerbeek of Telford, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1955.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Ronald H. Jirsa and his wife, Laura, of Plymouth, Minn.; his daughter, Susan J. Sisson and her husband, Ken, of Waterford; his daughter-in-law, Amy Jirsa of Hatfield, Pa.; and five grandchildren, Charlotte and Joseph Hammond, Courtney, Andrew, and Hannah Jirsa.
He was predeceased by his son, Andrew C. Jirsa, in 2007.
Ron was a member of the Ledyard Congregational Church, where he served as a Deacon and moderator. He was active in the Ledyard Boys League from 1968 until 1980 and served as coach and president. He played baseball in the former Morgan League for many years. He was a member of the Westbrook Fishing Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, gardening, and cribbage.
Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the LCC at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2012.
