Laverne "Joe"
Jenks, a 56 year resident of Hawthorne, passed away on Monday, January
18, 2010 in Torrance. Born in Persia, Iowa, Joe was 88 when he died.
Joe played semi-pro baseball as a catcher and had served in the Army Air
Force during WWII. He was married to his high school sweetheart, "Rose",
for 50 years before she passed away in 1993. He worked for the Los Angeles
County Fire Department as a heavy equipment truck driver for 25 years.
He is survived by sister, Leona Purchase of Torrance, CA; daughter, Catherine
Burris of Lawndale, CA; son, Bob (Marilyn) Jenks of Laguna Beach, CA,
and son, Phil (Roberta) Jenks of Hawthorne, CA. He had six grandchildren:
Rob, Joey, Amy, Burl, Sara & Michael and five great grandchildren:
Daniel, Kaarina, Anthony, Calin James & Connor.
Preceded in death by parents, Alonzo and Lottie Jenks and his wife, Rose
(Profeda) Jenks.
A gathering of family & friends will be held at White & Day Colonial
Mortuary on Friday, January 22, 2010 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. The
service will also be held at White & Day Colonial Chapel on Saturday,
January 23, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Pacific Crest Cemetery
in Redondo Beach.
