Stephen was born on Feb. 3, 1929, in Weirton, WV to Stephen Hirkala, Sr. and Jane Vikartovsky.
He graduated from Weirton High School, Weirton WV, and Tri State College in Angola, IN with a bachelor of science of mechanical engineering.
Stephen also played minor league baseball for the Cleveland Indians training team as pitcher. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and also played baseball for the U.S. Navy team, the Amphibians. Stephen retired from Bendix, Elyria OH in 1987, and most recently has been employed at the Home Depot in Brooklyn, OH.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 58 years, Irene Mary (nee: Hricik) of Weirton, WV, six children; Mark Stephen Hirkala of Houston Texas, Diane Lynn Osterfeld (Tim), of Santa Maria, CA, Karen Lee Jacobson (Gary) of Westford MA, Elaine Cheri Fisher (Robert) of Lookout Mountain, TN, Patricia "Trish" Jane Sabella (George) of Olmsted Falls, OH and Matthew James Hirkala (Carmen) of Sacramento CA; seven grandchildren, Adam Stephen Fisher of Boston, MA, Emily Ann Osterfeld of Orange County, CA, Caleb Lawrence Fisher of Redmond, WA, Claire Marie Osterfeld of Costa Mesa, CA, Liam Ferdinand Fisher of Castine ME, Alexis and Hannah Jacobson both of Westford MA, and two great grandchildren, Lily Claire Flaherty of Costa Mesa, CA and Hayden Kennedy Fisher of Redmond, WA.
He was preceded in death by his grandaughter, Alicia Elizabeth Osterfeld.
A celebration of Stephen's life will be held on Dec. 18 at St Mary's of the Falls with a Mass. The service will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's of the Falls Catholic Church, 25615 Bagley Road, Olmsted Falls, OH, 44138. A reception for family and friends will follow at the church.
