Billy Alva Hicks, 72, of Sarasota, FL, died on Jul. 8, 2012. Visitation will be held from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thurs., Jul. 12, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Sarasota.
Billy was born and raised in Sarasota.

He graduated from Sarasota High School in 1958 where he was a 4 year letterman in Football and a 3 year letterman in baseball. He played on the Sarasota High Baseball team that won the schools first State Baseball Title in 1957.

He attended Alabama University on a baseball scholarship for 2 years, then signed with the Chicago White Sox, where he played for 7 years. He managed Shelton's Plant Nursery in Sarasota for many years, and later had his own wholesale nursery in Old Myakka.

After that he started his own landscape business with his oldest son, Don, which he retired from in 2009. He loved gardening in his yard, tinkering in his garage, hunting and fishing and playing golf.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shannon, his children Don (Karen), his daughter, Marcy, and son, Michael. Two grandsons, Christopher and William. He is also survived by his step children, Carol Zielinsky (Bob), Christine Haarer (Gregg), Craig Robinson, three step-grandchildren, Tyler Benesh, Gregg Haarer II, Danielle Haarer and step great granddaughter, Layla Haarer. Bill was previously married to Diane Quickel Hicks.

He will be deeply missed by all who loved him and will remain forever in our hearts.
