Millias Don Helms
Jr., 93 of Elizabeth City, N.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 in the W.
R. Winslow Memorial Home.
He was born in
Calhoun Falls, S.C., on Nov. 23, 1915, to the late Millias Don Helms Sr.
and Addie Crook Helms. Mr. Helms was the former
executive director of the Elizabeth City Boys Club from 1946 until 1977.
After retiring from the EC Boys Club, Don served his community by working
with EC Parks and Recreation for 21 years.
In recognition for his dedicated service to the youth of our area, the
EC Boys Club named the Little League Ball Park in his honor.
He was a member of the Calhoun Falls, SC Masonic Lodge #283, a member
and past Exalted Ruler of the B. P. O. Elks Club #856, a former District
Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler and in 1986, Mr. Helms was elected Grand Exalted
Ruler for the State of North Carolina.
Earlier in his career, Don played professional baseball. In 1940, Mr.
Helms entered the US Army and served during World War II with the 202nd
Military Police Company. He was a decorated veteran having received the
Europe-Africa-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 bronze stars.
Funeral services
followed by Masonic rites conducted by Eureka Lodge #317, AF & AM
will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at 3 p.m. in
Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Church Street, by Rev. David Turner and Mr.
Jim Overman.
Following the chapel service, the family will
receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home.
