James A. Harper, 80,
of Allentown, died November 8, 2011, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury
Twp. He was the husband of Doris J. (Bachman) Harper, for the past 58
years. Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Earle C. and Martha
James was an assembler at Exide Battery, Allentown for 33 years until
his retirement. He then was a custodian at the Boys & Girls Club of
Allentown. He was an Army veteran serving in Korea and attended Zion's
Reformed United Church of Christ, Allentown.
James played minor league baseball in the St. Louis Browns (Baltimore
Orioles) organization. He coached youth baseball at the Allentown Patriots
and was the recipient of the George "Bucky" Boyle and the Allentown
Patriots "Workhorse of the Year" awards for his community service.
Survivors: His loving wife, Doris; children, James R., and his wife, Barbara,
Gail A. Welty, and Thomas M., and his wife, Caroline; grandchildren, James
M., Lori, Peter, Zachary and Mackenzie; great-grandchildren, Autumn, Evan
and Owen; sister, Betty Cocca.
Services: Saturday 10 a.m. at Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home,
17 and Hamilton Streets, Allentown. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Memorial
Park, Hanover Twp. Family and friends may call Friday 7 to 8:30 p.m. and
Saturday 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
