J. Hanges passed away on December 24, 2012 in The Villages, Florida where
he lived with his daughter Sherry and her domestic partner Marvin Bomber.
George was born in Oklahoma City on January 10, 1926 to Dimitri and Athena
Hanges. He was the second of three sons of Greek imigrants. George was
married to Louise Warthen Hanges for 35 years until her death in 1983.
George passed away leaving many wonderful memories and heartwarming experiences
with family and friends.
While attending Willard Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High and Central
High he loved to play baseball. He practiced and developed his baseball
skills so well that when he was a senior in high school he was recruited
and established a professional baseball career with the Brooklyn Dodgers
minor league team in Olean, New York.
After his baseball career George was employed with Nelson Industrial Paint
Contractors until his retirement. He was admired and loved by those who
knew him and called him "Papa George".
During his last years he played golf, bocce ball and was an avid fan of
the local baseball teams. But most of all, he doted on his granddaughter
Angela who played high school softball and basketball. He never missed
any of her games.
George was preceded in death by his wife Louise Warthen Hanges, his parents
Dimitri and Athena Hanges and his oldest brother Tom J. Hanges.
He is survived by his loving daughter who cared for him in her home for
many, many years, his granddaughter Angela, and close family member of
the home, Marvin Bomer.
He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Gus and Betty Hanges
of Fairfield, Ohio, his sister Patricia Hanges Rigler of Oklahoma City,
his nephew Brad Rigler, wife Connie and great nephew Christopher of Rockwall,
Texas, nephews James T. Hanges of Incline Village, Tahoe, James C. Hanges
and wife Neila of Fairfield, Ohio, Walter Paul (Butch) Hanges, wife Paula,
sons Travis, Kyle, Jordan and daughter Brooke, Hudsonville, Michigan and
great nieces Kara Hanges, husband Patric, Katie Elfers, husband Greg and
Constance Hanges, Fairfield, Ohio.
All of his family will miss him and his sweet smile.
A memorial service will be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at a later
