CHINA GROVE - Walter Odell Graham, 81, of China Grove, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord.

Born Oct. 21, 1927, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Council Franklin and Emma Benson Graham. He was educated in Rowan County schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mr. Graham played professional baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1945-1949. He was employed by W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center for 30 years before retiring in 1988.

He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church of Salisbury.

Mr. Graham was preceded in death by his brother, Tommy R. Graham, and his sister, Thelma G. Barringer.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruth Jones Graham, whom he married Dec. 25, 1945; son Barry Dale Graham and wife Melody of Conover; and granddaughter Laura Ann Stone and husband Jason of Raleigh.

Service and Visitation: A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Roger C. Mackey, minister of Second Presbyterian Church, officiating. The family will speak to friends following the memorial service.

Memorials: Mr. Graham suffered with Myasthenia Gravis and memorials may be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, Inc., 355 Lexington Ave., 15th Floor, New York, NY 10017.
