MARION - Robert Doug Goddard, 88, passed away at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Doug was born June 8, 1921, in Marion, the son of Glen Spiller and Una Olive (Caplinger) Goddard.

He married Juanita Woodford in 1947, in Marion; together they shared more than 38 years of marriage until her death Jan. 30, 1985. During their marriage, they lived for several years in California.

Doug proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army.

He retired as a supervisor from Allen Industries and had also worked as a coal miner.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Marion and a life member of Marion Eagles. Doug served as a board member for the city of Marion Housing Authority for 18 years, in which he was chairman three times. For many years, he attended Marion Senior Citizens, he was an avid athlete and was formerly a minor league baseball player. Doug loved to dance.

Survivors include his close friends, Gene and Lynda Goolsby of Marion, Helen Ramsey of Pittsburg and Diana Etheridge of Marion; and two stepgranddaughters, Lori Lynn Barnheart and Sherry Lee Woodford of Corona, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Kathryn McCluskie; and brother, Joe Goddard.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Bob Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery, with military rites presented by Marion VFW Post 1301, American Legion Post 147 and National Guard Flag Detail Unit. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
