Eugene C. Gartland, former president of a plumbing company and a leader in building a public library in Richmond Heights, died of cancer Monday (April 13, 2009) at his home. He was 81 and a lifelong resident of Richmond Heights.
Mr. Gartland played football and baseball at St. Louis University High School and was a pitcher in the minor-league system of the former St. Louis Browns. He attended St. Louis University, then served in the Navy from 1947 to 1949 on an oil tanker.
For three decades, he ran Gartland Co., a plumbing and irrigation company in Richmond Heights.
He served on the planning commission and library board in Richmond Heights and was chairman of the building committee for the city's former library that was opened in 1972.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Immacolata, 8900 Clayton Road, Richmond Heights, followed by burial at Resurrection Cemetery.
