Felipe Leal Garcia, 67, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, in Saltillo, Coah., Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felipe Leal Zarate and Delia Garcia De Leal.

Felipe Leal Garcia was born on May 29, 1943, in Matamoros, Mexico. He attended Saint Joseph Academy where he played all sports. He was a very distinguished basketball player. Then he was a student at Texas Southmost College and Pan American University where he played baseball. During his life, he played for various professional baseball leagues, including the California Angels franchise, the Orioles, and in the Mexican Leagues, Diablos Rojos, Saraperos and others. His nickname was "Brazo Fuerte," which means strong arm.

He was the director for the State Sports Institution of Tamaulipas during the government of Manuel Cavazos Lerma. He is a member of the Hall of Fame in Tamaulipas and Coahuila and also the Athletics Hall Of Fame at University of Texas-Pan American.

His kind personality, his sense of responsibility and his friendliness toward others will be remembered by those who knew him. He devoted much of his own time to share his sports knowledge with youth.

He is survived by his wife, Graciela Dominguez de Leal; his daughter, Graciela Leal Dominguez; brothers, Ruben Leal Garcia (Yolanda Hinojosa de Leal) and Luis Enrique Leal Garcia; sisters, Teresa Leal de Rhi (Pablo Rhi Perez) and Delia Leal de Canovas (Fernando Canovas Royo); nieces, Adriana Leal de Sarmiento, Inez Marcela Leal de Gonzalez, Delia Margarita Canovas de Salinas, Pilar Canovas de Salinas, y Fernanda Canovas Leal; and nephews, Luis Pablo Rhi Leal, Rene Rhi Leal and Ruben Leal Hinojosa.

Funeral services were in Saltillo at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, with a Mass celebrated at the Convento de San Juan.
