Services for Charles Edwin Galey, 76, of Lubbock will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jay Horton officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home. He passed away on Sept. 21, 2008, after a brief illness.
The family will receive friends from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at Sanders Funeral Home.
Charlie was born Nov. 15, 1931, in County Line to Hershel and Beatrice Galey. He attended Shallowater Schools and graduated from Lubbock High School in 1949. He was honored to be voted President of the student body and All-Westerner Boy. He received a full athletic scholarship at SMU where he played baseball and basketball and was named co-captain of the basketball team and captain of the baseball team. After completing his undergraduate degree at SMU, he played professional baseball for the Lubbock Hubbers. Charlie served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1956. On April 21, 1956, he married Gloria Ruth Snell at the First United Methodist Church in Lubbock. He then attended law school at SMU on an academic scholarship. After graduating law school, he and Gloria moved back to Lubbock. He joined the Campbell, Brock, Waters and Wright Law Firm and later became a partner. After several years he established his own firm in Lubbock and served as attorney for the Lubbock County Hospital District.
Charles was chairman of the board for Lubbock MHMR and was president of the Lubbock State Bar Association, a member of the Southwest Rotary Club and was 32nd Degree Mason. He was a strong Christian and a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church.
Charles was a beloved husband and father and a great friend to many; he will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gloria; a son, Charles Gregory Galey of Manchaca; and a daughter, Ginifer Ruth Galey of Santa Fe.
