Richard Fugazzi, 83

Dongan Hills native Richard (Dick) Fugazzi, 83, a retired city firefighter who played briefly for the Pittsburgh Pirates, died Wednesday at his home in Brick, N.J.

Mr. Fugazzi graduated from New Dorp High School.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1945 to 1947.

Following his honorable discharge, he played professional baseball for a year for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Mr. Fugazzi then served for 33 years as an FDNY firefighter. He retired in 1981 from Ladder Co. 77 in Stapleton.

He relocated to Brick in 1988.

Surviving are his wife of 57 year, the former Priscilla Forbes; his son, Richard Jr.; his daughters, Barbara Olivieri and Linda Califano; two sisters, Lorraine Pebole and Arlene Macchia, and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Christopher’s R.C. Church, Grant City. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
