James Sykes Faircloth
A graduate of Bessemer High School and an alumnus of Guilford College, James also served in the 29th Division during World War II and participated in the European theater, including the invasion of Normandy. Upon returning home after the war, he played semi-professional baseball in the Coastal Plain and Tobacco State leagues and then professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers organization in the Canadian-American league. He worked for Hatteras Yachts, in New Bern, until his retirement.
James was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Faircloth of High Point; his children, Phillip Faircloth (Grace) of High Point and James D. Faircloth (Jo Ann) of Grain Valley, Mo., his beloved grandchildren, Neal and Andrew Faircloth and step-grandchildren Greg Jones and Samantha Hankins of Independence, Mo. James also leaves behind his brothers, Bradley Faircloth of Greensboro and John Faircloth (Diane) of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Elma Faircloth, and his brother, Payton Faircloth.
James enjoyed music and especially playing the piano. He also enjoyed baseball, golf and woodworking; however, his true joy was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.
A memorial service and celebration of James' life will take place this Monday, February 8, at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Memorial United Methodist Church, 101 Randolph Street, Thomasville, N.C. Dr. Ivan Peden will officiate.
He will be sorely missed by all.
