John A. Edler

John A. Edler, a lifelong
resident of the Erie area, died Sunday, November 16, 2008 at his residence.
Born July 5, 1920 in Erie, Pa., he was the son of the late Adelbert S.
and Anna Doyle Edler.
John was a 1939 graduate of Harborcreek High School, and then served in
the United States Army during World War II. He was employed by the City
of Erie as a fireman, retiring in 1971, and then going to Edinboro University
until 1986, where he was supervisor of maintenance.
John was past-president of the Times Old Newsies, a member of the Ainsworth
Field Commission and the Erie Veterans Memorial Stadium Commission.
He was also a sports official for over 50 years, umpiring baseball, and
referring football, basketball and wrestling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice
Rossell Edler, on January 14, 1994. Survivors include his daughter, Clarice
Sue Edler, of Erie; a sister, Caroline Graham, of Harborcreek; a brother,
Norman Edler, of Harborcreek; and several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Johns wishes, there will be no visitation. Family
and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday
at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1626 W. 26th St. Burial will be
