Robert F. ("Bud") Drilling, 80 died March 24, 2008. Bud was born the fourth of five children to Joseph and Nina Drilling on October 2, 1927, in Fonda, Iowa.
Bud attended Roosevelt school and Tulare Union High School, graduating in 1945. A star pitcher for the Redskins, Bud signed a contract out of high school with San Francisco Seals of the old Pacific Coast League.
Then, at 18, Bud served in the Army during World War II. Upon his discharge, he rejoined the Seals and was sent to the Salt Lake City Bees. He was traded to the Portland Beavers of the Coast League. He also played in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and in Mexico during winter leagues.
On Nov. 5, 1949, he married the former Joan Atkisson of Tulare.
