SALISBURY, Pa. — Stanley Joseph Dougan, 83, son of the late Joseph Stanley Dougan and Anna Supernavage Dougan, died on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury.

Mr. Dougan was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Joseph Dougan in 1985.

Mr. Dougan was born on Nov. 24, 1928 in Penn’s Grove, N.J.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty June Dougan; daughter, Patricia and Robert Jones of Keyser, W.Va.; son, James Lee and Sandra Dougan of Bishopville; six grandchildren, Travis and Becky Jones, Todd Jones, Tara Jones, Tiffany Jones, Alexandra Nicole Dougan and Clare Elizabeth Dougan; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Dougan also leaves behind three brothers and one sister, John Dougan, William Dougan, Joe Dougan and Joanne Gagliardi.

Mr. Dougan was born and raised in Penn’s Grove, he attended Penn’s Grove Regional High School, where he was a star athlete in track, baseball and basketball. After graduating, he was signed to a professional baseball contract with the Wilmington Blue Rocks. He then joined the Army from 1949-1950 and served in the Navy from 1950-1954. During his time of service, he was an officer aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS FD Roosevelt.

After his service years, he attended and graduated from South East Missouri State University and obtained his Masters at Marshall University. Mr. Dougan started his teaching tenure in Clewiston, Florida, and finished his career as a distinguished Professor Emeritus at Allegany College of Maryland, where he taught for over 30 years. Here he was instrumental in creating the Criminal Justice Program at Allegany College. Mr. Dougan was also a member of St. John Neumanns Catholic Church.

A military funeral service was held in Mr. Dougan’s honor on June 8, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
