Arva Vance (Diz) Dean, 82, of 1161 Joseph Martin Hwy., Martinsville, died Friday, September 14, 2012, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Vance was born August 19, 1930 in the Austinville area, a son of the late Malcolm Thomas Dean and Margaret Isabelle Dean and was preceded in death by a brother, Boyce Dean.

Vance was retired from Dupont as a millwright with 35 years of service and previously played minor league baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Surviving is a daughter, Kitty Dean Bowman, of Richmond; three sons, Bobby Dean, of Martinsville, Scott Dean, of Statesville, N.C. and Todd Dean, of Martinsville; a sister, Joyce Dean Cash, of Nebraska; two brothers, Elroy Dean and Rex Dean, both of Pulaski and by six grandchildren, Gregg Dean, Renee Yancey, Jordan Dean, Bryan Dean, Jeffrey Bowman and Steven Hill. There are eleven great-children surviving, Seth Yancey, Nadia Yancey, Victoria Dean, Aliyah Dean, Ashlyn Dean, Micah Jones, Noah Jones, Jaida Rai Dean and Sebastian Hill, Ryan Bowman and Emily Bowman.

The funeral will be conducted from Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel, Monday, September 17, 2012 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Bethany Methodist Church Cemetery in Wythe County at 3 p.m. Monday.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Sunday, September 16, 2012 from 6 until 8 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence.
