Nicholas J. DeLuca, 93, of Largo, FL, died peacefully on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Ocean County Medical Center. Mr. DeLuca was born in Sykesville, PA and was raised in Newark, NJ, where he graduated from East Side High School. He served honorably during World War II as a US Army Infantryman assigned to the 94th Infantry Division.

A talented athlete, he played 9 seasons of minor league baseball including 3 seasons of Triple-A with Durham Bulls and spring training with the Boston Red Sox between 1940 and1952. He was an All-Star player in the Kids n' Kubs, a senior softball league in St. Petersburg, FL, where he played admirably until the age of 90.

Prior to his professional baseball career, Mr. DeLuca was a salesman for JC Penney in Wayne, NJ before retiring 35 years ago.

Mr. DeLuca was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Ann, of 46 years, three brothers, and three sisters.

Surviving are his daughter, Mary and her husband Richard D. Schibell, Esq. of West Long Branch; a son, Robert T. DeLuca and his wife, Carol of Coxsackie, NY; and two sisters, Mary Bohn and Rosina Cicchino of Brick, NJ.

Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Richard N. Schibell, Esq., LTjg Natalie A. Schibell, USN, Paul M. Schibell, Jessica R. Dean, Lauren K. De Luca, Esq., Steven R. De Luca, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 21 from 1-5 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave, (corner of Third Ave) Long Branch, NJ.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 8:30 am at the funeral home followed by a 9:30 am Mass at Holy Trinity Church, Long Branch.

Entombment will be at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.
