Donald Jack DeGroote, Jr., 79, died at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines on May 3, 2012. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, May 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Cherry Glen Park, Shelter #3, 4586 NW 94th Avenue, Polk City.

Donald was born February 4, 1933 in Des Moines. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He is remembered as a superb athlete, having an early career as a professional baseball player, and excelled in any sport in which he participated. He was very intelligent and a talented artist.

Those left to remember Donald are his children, Melanie Coon, Melisse (Brian) Leopold, Melinda (Steve) Fontanini, Cammy Hayes, Miles DeGroote, Tracy (Jason) Lehmann, Wade (Paula) DeGroote, Bobbie (Mark) Kraber; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Helen; and granddaughter, Amanda Fontanini.
