County board member John Davsko
Davsko, who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2010, died Friday.
Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter said that, despite the debilitating effects of the disease, Davsko faced the future with determination, good humor and thoughtfulness for everyone around him.
“I’ve never witnessed anything like it,” Van Meter said of Davsko’s spirit. “His spirits never really flagged. He really, in a way I don’t think most people could, continued to enjoy every day for what it was.”
Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS, involves a progressive degeneration of nerve cells that are responsible for motion.
Davsko was appointed to the board in 2007 when former board member Tim Griffin was elected to the Springfield City Council. He won a four-year term in November of 2008.
Davsko also was a member of the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame. A 1964 graduate of Griffin High School, he was an all-state basketball player and pitched on a state championship baseball team. He played baseball and basketball at St. Louis University and pitched in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system until an arm injury ended his career.
No funeral information was available Friday.
