LUGOFF - Wilton
"Bill" Howell Davis Jr., 74, of Lugoff, passed away Sunday,
February 12, 2012, at home surrounded by family and friends. He was the
eldest child of Wilton Howell and Marie Rickard Davis. Bill was born in
Dearborn, MI, and later moved to Columbia because of his father's job
Bill was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Dentsville High School in 1956.
He was active in football, basketball and baseball during high school.
Bill signed with the Cleveland Indians baseball organization and played
for two of their minor league teams before a shoulder injury ended his
baseball career. He attended Clemson University where he studied forestry.
Later he married and began the life as a father. His great love of the
outdoors led him into forestry where he worked for the Milliken Forestry
Company. He relocated to Lugoff where he started a small farm. Bill spent
a number of years running his own company, B&D Fence Co. In retirement,
Bill enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his sister, Inez Davis Long of Bluffton; a brother, Robert
Charles Davis of Conway; children, Wilton Howell Davis III of Clarksville,
TN, Thomas Robert Davis of Bluffton, Dawn Renea Davis of Lugoff, Robert
Everett Davis of Columbia, Mary Jo Davis of Columbia, and James Anthony
Davis of Bluffton. Bill was a loving grandfather to 15 grandchildren and
one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a son, David Rickard Davis
of Columbia, SC.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Kornegay & Moseley
Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 4645 Hard Scrabble Road at 2:00
p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2012, with Pastor Otis Lee and Pastor Doyle
Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends following the service
at the funeral home. Honorary pallbearers will be Kendol Hoagland and
Jimmy Ray Ford.
The family wishes that, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United
Hospice of Columbia or Ducks Unlimited.
