Gerald Davis, 97, Great Falls, Mont., formerly of Neenah, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, in Great Falls. He was born April 30, 1912, in Wild Rose, son of Griffith and Winiferd (Lamphear) Davis. He married Bernice Champagne in Niagara, Wis., in 1937 and she preceded him in death in 1947. He married Effie Mathison Rieckman in Neenah, in 1948 and she preceded him in death in 2001.

Gerald was a professional baseball player and was an 18-year-old pitcher from Central Wisconsin. He signed with the Milwaukee Brewers AAA Association team from 1930 to 1931. After an arm injury, Gerald was with the Northern League - Superior Blues from 1933 to 1934 and later, being employed with Kimberly-Clark Corporation in Niagara, became a member of their team from 1935 to 1944, and later other teams in the Fox River Valley. His last game was in 1947.

Gerald is survived by his son, Dennis G. Davis, Great Falls; a sister, Vivian Osiniski, Waupaca; grandchildren, Lisa (fiance, Robert Shapiro) Davis, Bethesda, Md., and her children, Griffith D. and Anderson D. Ruck; Scott (Stephie) Davis, Calgary, Alberta Canada, and his daughter, Maggie Davis; numerous nieces and nephews, including his favorite, Clifford Steinke, Waupaca.

A special relationship developed and he and his wife were known as Uncle Jerry and Aunt Effie to numerous nieces and nephews, especially in the Effie "Mathison" family.

Mr. Davis was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donovan Davis; and a sister, Evelyn Steinke.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at the Kessler Funeral Home with the Rev. James Seim officiating. Interment will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of the service.
