Elroy was born on July 7, 1924 to Frank Lawrence and Rachel Ann (Horton) Dalton in Big Reed Island River, Dugspur, Virginia..in the valley which was inhabited by his ancestral family for over 200 hundred years and in the state where his family has lived since 1620. He was a graduate of Bedford High School, Bedford, Ohio on June 4, 1942. Following graduation he had enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp and served in the Pacific stationed in Hawaii during WWII, he also had been stationed in Quantico, Virginia.
Red as he was known to his family and friends, played baseball while serving in the Marines and upon discharged was signed with the Cleveland Indians Baseball Association, as a left handed pitcher playing in the minors in Dayton, Ohio, Burlington, Iowa, Cordele, Georgia and Spartansburg, South Carolina. He was employed as an operating Engineer with Local # 66, working on various construction projects and area interstate highways. He raised Registered Herefords and was active in the Northwestern Pennsylvania Polled Hereford Association. He was a member of the Reash United Brethren Church, Cochranton and the Cochranton Masonic Lodge # 790. Elroy loved spending time with his family, traveling, baseball, watching rodeos and old westerns on television.
On October 19, 1946 he married the former Donna L. Midlam who preceded him in death on July 16, 1990, he subsequently married the former Doris Wescott Wilcox on December 31, 1990 and she survives at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; Thomas E. Dalton and his wife Nancy of Cochranton, William E. Dalton and his wife Connie of Conneaut, Ohio and Feron E. Dalton and his wife Renauda of Cochranton. 2 stepsons; Pat Wilcox and his wife Geneva of Cochranton and Michael Wilcox and his wife Nancy of Skiatook, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Donna, 2 daughters; Linda and Rebecca Dalton in 1965, a grandson Tyler Boozer and a stepson James Wilcox.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home, Ltd. 3223 Perry Hwy., Sheakleyville with Pastor Samuel Heagy of the Cornerstone Church of God Church, Meadville officiating. The interment with Military honors accorded by the Meadville VFW Post # 2006 will follow at the Hadley Cemetery.
