John Joseph Craven, age 94, "Entered into Eternal Rest" on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 1:10 PM.

He was a lifelong resident of New Orleans, Louisiana. Beloved husband of Aline Bourgeois Craven for 56 years.

Father of eight children: John M. Craven, George A. Craven (Nathalie), Aline C. Cowdrey (Bill), Joseph E. Craven (Rhonda), Catherine C. Ritter (Chris), Mary C. Welker (Vic), Patrick T. Craven and Paul S. Craven.

He is survived by 20 grandchildren. He was the brother-in-law of Edna Mae Hyde, Elodie Bourgeois and Joyce Serio Brown. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Craven, Sr. and Julia Schmitz Craven, and five sisters and four brothers: Mary, Theresa, Beatrice, Claire, Florence, Daniel, James, Jr., George and Robert. He was the son-in-law of the late Oswald F. Bourgeois and Edna Buck Bourgeois.

He was a graduate of Warren Easton High School in 1934 where he was President of his class and on the State Championship Baseball Team. He went to Spring Training with the New Orleans Pelicans. His baseball career was cut short due to WWII. He was a WWII veteran in the Pacific Campaign where he received a Bronze Star. He later became a professional umpire.

He worked for the New Orleans Clerk and Checkers Union for 35 years. He was a member of the Diamond Club. He was an avid golfer and member of City Park Golfers Association.

He was a parishioner of St. Dominic and Lakeview for 45 years. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Dominic Rebuilding Fund, 775 Harrison Ave., New Orleans, LA 70124 in his memory.
