HAVERHILL — Thomas F. Coughlin, 78, of Haverhill and Delray Beach Fla, formerly of Wakefield died on Sunday Feb. 8, 2009 at the Prescott House in North Andover.

Born in Somerville on March 6, 1930 he was the son of the late William J. and Bridget (Bullen) Coughlin.

Mr. Coughlin was a graduate of Arlington High School, Class of 1948 and Northeastern University.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a retired Special Investigations Unit Manager for Sentry Insurance Company in Boston and a former pitcher in the New York Yankee farm system.

Mr. Coughlin was the former head of the CCD program at St. Florence Church. He was also active in Little League baseball and coached the Savage Cleaners and New England Pools teams.

Mr. Coughlin was the husband of Martha (Dickinson) Coughlin. He was the father of Thomas F. Coughlin, Jr. of Amesbury, Maryellen Coughlin of Salem, N.H., Catherine A. Coughlin of Haverhill, Anne Marie Sahagian of Pelham, N.H. and Martha Jean Korkuc of Amherst, N.H. He was the brother of William J. Coughlin of Beverly, Carol Pick of Westford, Paul Coughlin of Boxford and Margaret Bastarache of Delray Beach, Fla. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Daniel, Jennifer, and Ryan.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield, on Friday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Haverhill.
