LEICESTER - On October 11, 2012, Carl King Chastain, Jr., from Leicester, N.C., died in Shelby, N.C. Carl was born on April 25, 1931 and was the son of Carl and Margaret Chastain. He was married to late Bobbie Nash Chastain and is survived by his son, Chad, Chad's wife, Gloria, and grandson, Jackson.

Carl was the consummate gentleman, friend and father. He lived life with clarity in a reserved style. He appreciated architecture and was especially interested in the mid-century modern homes, which he shared with his son.

Carl was also an athlete. In high school and college, Carl earned 7 letters in baseball, 4 letters in football, 3 letters in basketball and 1 letter in track. He attended West Buncombe High School and graduated from Ben Lippen School in 1949. A gifted pitcher, he was offered a baseball scholarship to attend Wingate College. After his first year, he was offered a try-out with the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he traveled to Vero Beach, Florida for spring training. He played several years of minor league professional baseball.

Carl later graduated from Brevard College. He also played baseball in the 1950's industrial leagues; teams sponsored by employers. Carl had boxed professionally since 1949 and concluded his career in boxing 1959 with 40 professional fights. He later took up bowling and qualified for a PBA national event. Golf was Carl's nemesis. A life long golfer in search of the sub-par round, he experimented with every new club, grip and stance. As his senior years approached, he qualified and won many senior game events. In addition to his personal athletic accomplishment, he founded and coached several youth baseball and football teams, similar AAU teams today. His faith was demonstrated by his induction into the Masons.

Carl surrounded himself with his lifelong friends. Friends who never forgot each other and always cared about each other. They were always there for Carl as he was for them. He will be greatly missed.

The funeral service will be on Sunday, October 14, 2012 at 3 PM at Kadesh United Methodist Church in Belwood, N.C. Friends will be received at the church fellowship hall from 2 to 3 PM.
