CLINTON - Karl J. "Jake" Charter, 72 of The Town of Clinton, died Friday February 18, 2011 at Ferncliff Nursing Home, Rhinebeck, New York.

Born in Poughkeepsie, New York on October 18, 1928 he was the son of Karl F. & Marion Burke Charter. He married Gloria F. Fowx on September 24, 1950 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She survives at home.

He was self-employed for many years in various businesses.

Jake was a top athlete locally and nationally during his time. A Minor League Baseball Player (1949-54) with the Poughkeespie Chiefs he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox and played in their farm system.

After baseball Jake bowled nationally on television, as a member of the PBA and NBL. He also appeared in Sport and Sports Illustrated Magazines during his prime. He was a Member of the Dutchess County Hall Of Fame for bowling, softball and baseball.

Jake was a loving Husband and Father who's positive attitude brought happiness to everyone he met. He truly lived up to his nickname "Laughing Boy".

He is survived by his sons: Karl M. Charter of Poughkeepsie; Kris & Robyn Charter of Red Hook, N.Y. and Kent & Christine Charter of Wappingers Falls, N.Y. a daughter: Gloria K. Charter of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; sister: Jean Tervenski of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; grandchildren: Amanda Quinn and Zachary & Wyatt Charter and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Kevin Charter and a sister, Joan Calenti.

Calling hours are Tuesday February 22, 2011 4 to 6 PM at the William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12603. Services will be at 6 PM in The Funeral Home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery at a later date.
