Jerry Robert Causey, 63, died Monday at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo. He was a Vallejo native and resident.

Mr. Causey was a Napa County probation officer for 16 years, before retiring in September of 2000. He was also a Vallejo school district teacher, athletic director and coach for the University of Denver, and Solano Community College men's basketball coach.

He played first base for the Houston Astros for two years, season of 1965-1966. He later was drafted into the U.S. Army. Mr. Causey was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Denver in October 1996 for baseball and basketball. He also made the Solano Community College Hall of Fame in October 1996 and the Vallejo Hall of Fame in February 2007.

Survivors include his wife of seven years, Karen R. Wilmot-Causey; daughter, Deana Hopwood, and stepdaughter, Kathleen Wilmot, both of Vallejo; stepson, Ali Early of Atlanta, Ga.; his mother, Bessie Causey of Vallejo; sister, Betty Causey of Vallejo; brother, David Causey (Karen) of Fairfield; nieces, Monique Crowley of Washington and Jennifer Causey of Fairfield; and nephew, David Causey of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Causey, and brother, Frank Causey.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wiggins-Knipp Funeral Home, Vallejo. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday also at the mortuary, with Major Debbie Hood of the Salvation Army officiating.
